Earth

Rating (****/*****)

On the 7th September 2009 was the public holiday but it never stop us to be aware on what happened to the environment and to be aware of earth’s limited sources. So Dr Irene gave us assignment to watch this particular movie regarding our earth title “HOME”. A heart breaking documentary movie that actually hold its every spectator and make us realized what really human did to our home called earth. A film by Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

Beautiful views from the outer space but on the surface the facts are not as what we imagine. Lots of horrible thing happened on the earth that human being does not know about. On the front cover of every magazine and newspaper, human build great huge buildings and bridges, creating new inventions but the facts is that the earth are being “crushed”. As to fulfill human needs, we cleared our forest for new settlement, industrialization and more (deforestation), which leads to frequent disasters example flooding and climatic shift due to global warming, human activities such as spillage of toxic waste contributes to greenhouse effect. More and more CO2 are pumped into the atmosphere than the plants can absorb it. The surface is getting hotter melting the polar caps as a result the earth water level rises.

Touching in term of earth water level, do we know that earth fresh water is only 3% available to us? This amount of water we used for producing our foods, feed our livestock and lastly not to forget us human also need it to live. 97% of earth fresh water is not accessible stored as ice in the polar caps. So what would happen if we run off fresh water? Water is very important in many aspects.

Human had disturbed the balance of the earth and gradually disrupt its stability. From the natural life cycle to the artificial ones, let just take livestock for the instant, animal grow faster than they should be. Plants can be grown at the same spots for years due to the inventions of chemical fertilizers. These are the proof that human has intervene in the way things should be in nature.

What the movie is trying to do is to inspire global action by raising awareness of our shared responsibility for the planet, all of its inhabitants and take part in the effort. As simple as not wasting our precious water source and switch off electrical appliances when not needed as to reduce our usage, wastage. When everyone follows these measures it is not impossible that earth can be saved or at least delay the inevitable from happening.
