On the 14th September 2009, Dr. Irene had given us a task to make a survey on electricity usage in UBD. We were asked to work in pairs as my partner Mohd Hafidz Bin Haji Hassan was allocated at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). All we have to do is to check every detail of the areas and spots for evidence that leads to the electricity wastage and contribute to “Greenhouse Effects”.
Aims - To make the UBDians to realize and aware of their actions on the electricity usage.
HOW ELECTRICITY CAN CONTRIBUTE TO GREENHOUSE EFFECTS?
In Brunei, the electricity is powered by generators by burning gas supplied to it. So, when the demand of electricity rises, the generator has to do extra works to supply more power and these leads to more burning of gases. Briefly, Gases produces from the burning of gas will get collected in the atmosphere and making the Ozone layer thinner, and allowing more heat from the sun to enter, not to mentions the UV radiations. Briefly, gas from burning are the major contributor of the greenhouse effect in the world. To know more about Greenhouse effects and its contributors, just

During the survey.
light in air-conditioner room were left "on" for 24/7.
leaking worsen and left untreated..
Notice were posted for UBD community to switch off the light when not needed.

light were left open eventho there is no one using the room. (picture were taken secretly)

computers in one of the lecture's room were left "on" when the lecture were having classes.
from the survey that we made around 8.30am-9.58 am, we come to below conclusion:
Locations | | Lights “on" | Computers “on” | Air conditioner “on” |
| |||
| | With people | Without people | With people | Without people | With people | Without people |
|
Rooms | | //////// | ///////// | | | O | O
Corridors | | | | | | O | O | 2nd floor |
Toilets | | | //////// | | | | | |
Rooms | | //////// | //// | /////// | // | O | O
Corridors | | | | | | O | O | 1st floor |
Toilets | | | //////// | | | | | |
Rooms | | /////////////// | / | | | O | O
Corridors | | | | | | | | Ground floor |
Toilets | | | //// | | | | | |
Key.
/ - number of usage.
O - yes
During the survey, we only concentrate on the light, air-conditioner and computer usage. It shows that on the 2nd and 1st floor electricity were “a bit” wasted when there is no one using it, but the rooms at the ground floor are fully utilize for the lecture.
Few steps to reduce the electricity usage:
- Switch-off any electric appliances when not using it.
- Use light only when necessary, just use the light from the outside if possible.
- Don’t switch-on all air-conditioner, a few is already enough.
Difficulties during the survey - Most doors were locked.
Lastly from the activity, I learn the meaning of team work and the most important thing is the side effects of over use of electricity. Where it’s not only going to affect locally but globally. Taking safety measure by reducing the electricity consumed for daily use are very important. Wise men once said “prevention is better than curing”.
